2019 Scout ‘Lowburn’ Chardonnay Cult Wine

Big, rich, creamy, complex Chardonnay from Central Otago. 

“The 2019 Scout Central Otago Chardonnay is sourced from two sites in the Lowburn
subregion. The sites are located on the shores of Lake Dunstan with an easterly
aspect that helps protect it somewhat from the afternoon heat. The wine is a blend
of Mendoza and Clone 95

The grapes were handpicked, and a small selection were foot stomped. This was to
provide an extra dimension of palate weight and breadth to the typically linear,
mineral Central Otago style. It was wild fermented in French Oak barriques (20%
new), before sitting on lees unsulphured over winter. Malolactic occurred
spontaneously before blending and bottling the wine in February 2020.

We love the tension and drive that Central Otago chardonnay possesses, and
sought to build further density, complexity and weight into the wine through the
use of skin soaking and lees contact. The short soak on skins has given a fine, pithy
tannin to the wine which helps carry the savoury lees flavours through the finish.”
